Our first in-depth project for this class will be to study how the human mind processes visual information. We will begin by reading the Introduction and Section One of the book, Visual Language for Designers – Principles for Creative Graphics that People Understand, by Connie Malamed.
Our intent is to use this information to gain an understanding of how viewers look at and process the visual communication objects that we as graphic designers create, as well as develop an insight into how we as designers view and process visual messages as we design them. This understanding will be the point-of-view from which we will explore historic and contemporary design theories and practices over the course of the semester.
As such, our first design will be to create an accurate and aesthetic visual model or infographic of the Visual Information Processing System based upon our research and study.
The infographic must be designed such that we will be able to insert an example of graphic design into the diagram and use it to postulate how the design might be viewed, analyzed, interpreted and processed by an intended audience member.
The project will include the following elements and actions:
– A Creative Brief for the project
– An in-depth reading an visual analysis of the assigned reading
– Word (Word List) and image (Image Board) research to generate ideas
– Concept Thumbnails of the diagram or score
– Tight Roughs of the design
– A final Design Infographic diagramming the process
Each of these required elements, as well as documentation of your design process, is to be posted to your blog under the post title: DP1 - VIP Info Graphic.
The reading and initial design concept thumbnails are due Thursday, January 18th.
Additional research and design development will be due Tuesday, January 23rd. •
The completed VIP System diagram will be due Thursday, January 25th.
The completed infographic, including integration of a design example into the system,
will be due Tuesday, January 30th.
